Felt Characteristics

Technical felt is differentiates between

  • woven felt or milling felt
  • woven / nonwoven neddled felt

Woven felt

Woven felt exclusively consist of animal hairs, mostly of sheep wool and/or the wool fibres, from which the classical woven felt is manufactured. Milling felt is called felt because this was felted under supply of pressure, warmth and circling or shaking movements, whereby the wool fibres concatenate themselves by their shed-like surface and incurrs the loss itself to a dense fleece. That follows the milling procedure, in the form of pressures and tossing in different directions. Also warmth and humidity are necessary during the milling process.

Needled felt

Needled felt can be made both from natural fibers or of synthetic fibers (e.g. PP or PES). Thereby the fibers are mechanically interconnected, by needle plates (out up to 250.000 needles and more) these with one another needles. That takes place by means of which possesses each individual needle hooks, with which the fibers are pulled into the fleece and are mechanically solidified.
